YEAR 2009 _ STATUS: COMPETITION
PRINCIPLE // The key principle stretching through all the scales of proposal for Pier Museum in South Beach is in itself the dynamic motion, the directing vector that crosses elementary limits.
CONCEPTUAL CONTEXT // The concept of voluntary nomad, the immigrant, is the main subject of the exposition and it is also present in the visitor of the museum, the tourist. For both of them the voyage is perceived as a mean to the goal or goal itself. The enhanced activity to progress overcomes physical, political and mental borders.
URBAN CONTEXT // The location of the site as a continuation of islands most vibrant access axis. The linear flow of 5th Street gradually curls on the seashore as it transforms from solid urban grid to lithe fluids of the ocean. The ambiguous ending of the vectors in the city, per mutating from a structured to undulating form, brings the urban structure to build scale. As the urban axis approaches the pier it gradually transforms in to the museum routes and finally flows into the richness of the interior spatial loop, thus brings the urban scale into the interior space and vice versa. The surrounding landscape reacts to that flow and the pier is being gradually merged into the beach creating a soft terrain with slightly sloped terraces, which allows to any passers-by a comfortable crossing of the pier structure.
PROPOSAL // The continual loop of eternal movement within the structure of the museum. There are two basic routes forming the museum. The two routes, exhibition route and education route interlace, blend, influence one another and part gain. The dialogue between them literally forms the mass of the building as well as organize the entire internal space. Due to this loop organization all visitors can fully experience always a new space along the entire museum trajectory, so there is no end unless they approach the start again. There are two particular spaces at the very tip of the entire structure enjoying certain contemplative mood beside just being a part of any loop. The two spaces, library and terrace, remain as purely contemplative spaces one can fully concentrate in. In any case each visitor can still approach them from any of mentioned routes. Such spatial configuration enables an efficient concentration of service areas into several evenly distributed cores throughout the entire space.
CONCLUSION // The evolution of population, urban and build structures is based on dynamic and ambitious motion. Pier Museum of immigration springs from the concrete substantial grounds into the ocean transforming a heavy linear current of urban dynamics into the continuous flow pedestrian routes in human scale. The structure fuses people, elements and forms.
